Nothing in life prepares you for the shock and disbelief that comes when a doctor says, "It's cancer." We heard those words, we felt the stifling fear and we experienced the flood of erratic emotions that seemed to take our breath away. The word overwhelmed comes short of describing your mindset the moment you hear the dreaded "C" word.
Only a month earlier, we noticed a pea-sized bump on our young daughter's arm. Two weeks later it had grown noticeably larger. Our family doctor took xrays that didn't show much. An MRI revealed an abnormal growth that drew concern.
I don't like advice from people who haven't walked in my shoes. They can't possibly know how I feel. When we say, "We know how you feel," you can be sure we know how you feel. Our family went through the whole cancer experience, from diagnosis to the last chemotherapy session almost a year later.
Because of her age, only a pediatric oncologist could order the biopsy. After the biopsy came the diagnosis: a highly malignant cancer of the muscle (Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma). The immediate result: doubt and piercing fear. The obvious question— "Now what?"
Our experience became the reason for writing the book. We want to relieve as much stress and anxiety as possible for those who go through standard cancer therapy.
