There are many organizations dedicated to helping families dealing with life-threatening diseases. Several were a real help and blessing to us personally. Below is a short list.
For children with life-threatening illnesses.
1. American Cancer Society. The ACS is a source of vital information about cancer and treatment (for adults as well as children). Ask about travel reimbursement (to and from hospital and/or doctor for child patients). 1-800-227-2345 (http://cancer.org)
2. Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Attending doctors usually submit children for consideration. Call 1-800-722-9474 or go to http://www.wish.org/.
3. Give Kids The World Village®. Located in Kissimmee, Florida, works hand-in-hand with over 250 wish-granting organizations worldwide. They are a home base for wish kids and their families when the child's wish includes visiting Central Florida's famous theme-park attractions. They can house up to 240 families in their modern, fully furnished villas. In case of an overflow, families are sent to the local Holiday Inn Sunspree®. Contact them at http://www.gktw.org/ to find the nearest wish organization in your area.
4. Ronald McDonald House Charities®. Check with your child's hospital to see if there is one nearby (there almost always is). They provide comfortable, affordable lodging for families while their child is hospitalized. (http://rmhc.org/) There are Ronald McDonald Houses in forty-eight countries around the world, each strategically located near a hospital treating children with life-threatening illnesses.
5. US Social Security. Register your child or adult loved one for possible Social Security benefits during treatment (typically $500 a month for children). Also register with Medicaid for help with hospital costs (adults and children). 1-800-772-1213 (http://www.ssa.gov/)
6. The Christian Law Association offers free legal help for Christians whose faith is being challenged by government authorities. (727-399-8300) http://www.christianlaw.org
